Summer Research Opportunity for High School Students

PHYSICS 492, PHYSICS RESEARCH 1
Available as an Independent Study during Summer Session 1, 2 or 3
40 hours of research = 1 credit
80 hours of research = 2 credits
120 hours of research = 3 credits

Description: Provides for an application of theoretical and/or experimental research methods to a special problem. May be interdisciplinary. Requires the preparation of a report and a plan, approved in advance by the department chairperson, which is acceptable to the student and the supervising faculty member.

Benefits of this type of experience: Provides an inexpensive opportunity for high school students to engage in authentic research with university faculty. This activity will help refine a high school students thinking when considering a future college major and show the kind of initiative needed for a distinguished college application.

High school students who desire to enroll in university courses must apply to the Office of Off-Campus, Summer College and Advanced College Experience (ACE) program. Students preparing to enroll at BU as a freshman in a degree program must apply to the admissions office. Applicants for this program will be considered Category 3 for admission purposes

Credential Requirements

Complete application for non-degree admission, official high school transcript and letter of recommendation from the student's high school guidance counselor. Scheduling is done through the ACE program coordinator. Students may take 12 credits per semester. Tuition and fees are reduced by 75 percent.

What's offered through ACE

  • College-level courses during the academic year at a high school in areas where the district does not have an AP course available
  • Courses on BU's campus during the academic year for advanced students
  • Summer classes in areas of interest to earn college credit
  • Senior-year-at-college programs for exceptional students, with high school approval
  • Special summer classes that free up schedules during the senior year

Tuition Reductions through ACE

  • 75 percent off the residential tuition and fee rates for classes offered at the BU campus on a space available basis. All regularly charged fees will apply.
  • 50 percent off the residential tuition and fee rates for courses offered at a school district site. Only off-campus fees apply.
