Teachers have an impactful role in the life of a developing child through mentoring, advocating and fostering learning. And as the child learner develops, the teacher continues to be a big influence in the classroom as a role model and support mechanism.
Bloomsburg University's secondary education undergraduate program includes teacher education, educational studies, educational technology, student teacher supervision (7-12) and secondary education. Students are required to spend time observing and assisting in actual classroom settings through courses offered in the sophomore and junior years.
These courses prepare students for the actual student teaching experience. Students may select an internship which provides a work-study program in an education-related setting. The secondary education major leads to a bachelor's in education (B.S.Ed.) and certification to teach grades 7 through 12.
Some courses, which satisfy Bloomsburg University’s general education requirement, are included in the course listings for the individual areas of specialization under secondary education.
Requirements for the secondary education (7-12) major include 35 semester hours in required core courses, plus courses specified for various specializations. Students should consult their advisor to plan a course of study.
Students are required to take a secondary methods course corresponding to their major from the following:
Secondary education enables you to build upon your passion in a specific area of interest as a contributing influence in helping to ensure students are well prepared for their future, while serving as a positive role model and supporter.

Students enrolled as education majors enter as "Pre-Teacher Education" (PTE) status. In order to register for upper level coursework, including student teaching, students must complete and submit an admission packet. This packet is reviewed in detail during the one-credit introductory course required by each major.
Bloomsburg University is approved to offer Education programs that lead to certification in Pennsylvania. While we regularly monitor licensure and certification laws in each state, state requirements are subject to change without notice. If you are interested in certification outside of Pennsylvania, we encourage you to contact the appropriate state licensing agency to seek guidance and verify requirements before beginning a program and during your program of study. Please visit bloomu.edu/state-authorization and www2.ed.gov for more information. If you are planning to teach in New Jersey, please note that you may be required to complete the edTPA, a performance based assessment. It's strongly recommended you contact the school district(s) of interest and the New Jersey Department of Education for more information specific to New Jersey.
