Access Student/Alumni Email on a Mobile Device or Email Software

NOTE: Configuring another email client or mobile device to check student email is totally optional - Student email may be accessed from any computer with an internet connection on the web at http://mail.huskies.bloomu.edu/ without any additional setup or configuration. If you still want to access your email account from email software or a mobile device, these options are also available to you. The options available, including training materials to help get you up and running on a specific program or device, are detailed below.

General Settings for mail setup are listed in the Basic Email Settings guide. For specific client instructions, check below.

Mobile devices

Exchange ActiveSync for mobile devices

If you have a smartphone/device that supports Exchange ActiveSync (such as Android, iOS, Windows, Blackberry 10+), your email account comes with very good mobile support. Keep in mind Exchange ActiveSync connects directly to the server, so if you delete messages, they will also be deleted in Webmail and vice versa.

Exchange/MAPI - "Outlook Anywhere" for Windows PCs

If you have Microsoft Outlook 2007 or later, you should configure it to access your account through "Outlook Anywhere". You will be able view/edit your email, calendar, tasks, and contacts.

IMAP

Recommended for users without Outlook 2007 or later.
When using IMAP, email messages will remain on the email server, but messages are able to be viewed on your IMAP client. IMAP does support multiple mail folders. IMAP does not support calendar, tasks, or contacts. IMAP essentially gives you access directly to the email server. By default, any message you delete is deleted from the mail server and will not be found in Outlook Web App (webmail).

POP

When using POP, it will retrieve messages from your main Inbox folder only. The POP protocol does not recognize any other folders in your mailbox.

Caution! Default POP settings REMOVE email messages from the email server once they are downloaded into your client so your only copy of the message will be on the computer you "POPed" the message down to. If you wish to leave the messages on the server so that you can also get them using another method (mobile phone or webmail), you MUST place a check in the box next to "leave a copy of the message on the server" when you set up your mail client. If you only use POP to access your email, you should disable Junk E-Mail filtering in your webmail options because otherwise you will never see the false-positive messages that are mistakenly moved to the Junk E-Mail folder since POP only checks your Inbox folder.
