Each summer, Bloomsburg University invites a group of select individuals to campus for an intensive 6-week experience that will serve as a foundation for life-long achievement. Throughout the Summer Preparatory Academy, you will gain confidence in mastering college-level work and will ultimately acquire the tools you will need to graduate.
What is the Summer Preparatory Academy?
The Summer Preparatory Academy gives Bloomsburg an opportunity to work with high school seniors who have academic potential, but based on one of more of the factors below, need an intensive summer experience to help them achieve academic success.

Is the Summer Prep Academy a requirement?
Yes. Students who are offered admission into the Summer Prep Academy must attend to continue to the fall semester. If you decline this offer, we encourage you to attend your local community college for 12-24 credits, and you can reactivate your application as a new transfer student. You must submit a final, official high school and college transcript.
Can I enter into a major as a Summer Prep Academy student?
Students must initially enroll as undeclared, and throughout the summer, students can work with staff to find a major that best fits their goals and strengths.
After successful completion of the summer courses, there are select majors that require a certain GPA or internal application process before a student may be admitted into a particular curriculum.
- All majors in the College of Science and Technology require proficiency in college-level math or an internal application before starting in the program.
- Nursing will not be available for Summer Prep Students in the fall following the summer.
- Pre-teacher education majors require a minimum 3.0 GPA at the end of the summer to be considered for entry into any education program.
- Sociology requires a minimum 2.5 GPA.
- American Sign Lanugage requires an internal application process.
- Criminal Justice requires an internal application process.
How many credits will I take in the summer?
You will enroll in 6-7 credits. In addition to attending class, you will attend seminars on personal financial management, experiential career exploration and guidance on leadership and decision-making.
What are the dates of the Summer Prep Academy?
Typically, the 6-week session will begin around the end of June or early July.
Can I return to BU for the fall semester following the summer?
A minimum 2.0 GPA is required to continue directly into the fall semester. If you earn below a 2.0, you will be asked to return home for the fall. We encourage those students to attend their local community college to complete 12-24 credits before returning to BU. You can then apply as a readmit student to potentially return to BU.
Are there costs associated with the Summer Prep Academy?
Yes. Regular tuition and fees apply. Many Summer Prep Academy students may qualify for federal, state, institutional or grant-funded assistance. Final costs will be determined after students submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
