Student Success Fee
Student Success Fee
In 1984, the state appropriation accounted for 65 percent of Bloomsburg University’s revenue. Today, that figure has dropped to 25 percent. BU is at risk of losing the ability to provide the high-quality educational experience our students expect and deserve. While the state appropriation has continually decreased, the need for academic support services and career development resources and experiences continues to rise. Clearly, the financial model that has been used in the past is no longer sustainable and the revenue from the Student Success Fee is necessary for the university to continue on course.
What is the Student Success Fee?
The Student Success Fee will protect the quality of the BU student experience by ensuring ongoing funding to support initiatives across campus that have a significant impact on student retention and graduation rates. The Student Success Fee will safeguard access to services that benefit all students, protect and enhance the quality of programs offered outside the classroom and ensure that high-quality programs are available so students may graduate on time. The fee will be assessed to all undergraduates, beginning fall 2016, at a rate of $300 per semester or $25 per credit for part-time students.
Impact on students
The Student Success Fee will support the long-term financial sustainability of Bloomsburg University and the quality of the total student experience. It will provide funding to cover expenses associated with maintaining and enhancing student academic support services and activities and advisement, as well as career development and associated experiential learning opportunities. Maintaining and enhancing access to support programs and advising will help facilitate students’ on-time graduation. Maintaining and enhancing support for university staff focused on career development and associated experiences ensures that Bloomsburg students are prepared for professional and personal success in an increasingly complex global environment.
How will the funds be used?
Revenue from the Student Success Fee will allow Bloomsburg University’s quality educational experience to continue. It will enhance initiatives that contribute to student success, with a goal of increasing undergraduate student retention and degree attainment. The fee also will support the BU strategic enrollment management division in strengthening recruitment, retention, advisement and financial aid services, with a focus on new degree programs to meet changing demographics and employment needs of the commonwealth.
