BU Community Orchestra concert features trumpeter

BLOOMSBURG— The Bloomsburg University Community Orchestra, featuring visiting trumpet clinician John Kennedy, will present a fall concert on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2:30 p.m. in BU’s Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall. Kennedy will also offer a trumpet master class on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m. in Carver Hall, Kenneth S. Gross Auditorium.

A professor of music at Eastern New Mexico University, Kennedy performs throughout the Southwest in programs ranging from classical to rock ’n’ roll. He is an active member of the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) and served as the coordinator of the 2005 ITG solo competition. Prior to his arrival at ENMU, Kennedy was a high school band director in Texas, New Mexico and Tennessee. He earned his doctorate of musical arts at Texas Tech University in 2002.

The BU Community Orchestra, in its 35th year, is celebrating professor of music Mark Jelinek’s 21st year as conductor. Jennifer Updegrove is in her eighth season as concertmaster for the orchestra, which is made up of students and area musicians.

The ensemble presents its repertoire of serious classics to popular music at the annual fall and spring concerts and at an educational concert for elementary school children. Upcoming performances include the Poinsettia Pops concert to be held Friday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall, and the Symphony Ball, set for Saturday, May 5, 2007, from 6 to 10 p.m. in Kehr Union, Ballroom.
