Conference discusses teaching strategies

For Immediate Release: May 10, 2013 Literacy and Learning BLOOMSBURG — Education professionals from across the region are expected to attend Bloomsburg University’s 49th annual Literacy and Learning Conference Thursday and Friday, May 23 and 24, in the McCormick Center. The conference will feature keynote speakers Henry Cole and W. Ian Bryne, as well as sessions focusing on strategies to effectively teach students of all ages. Children’s book author Henry Cole has illustrated more than 60 books for youngsters. In his keynote address, “It’s All a Little Sketchy: Life as a Children’s Book Illustrator,” Cole will address how he became an illustrator, his process in designing and giving a personality to his characters and how to match illustration to words. He will speak Thursday, May 23, at 10:10 a.m. in McCormick Center 1303. O’Bryne, assistant professor of educational technologies at the University of New Haven, will discuss “Authentically and Effectively Embedding New Literacies in the Common Core State Standards.” He will talk about the nature of information from the Internet and its implications for reading comprehension, critical thinking and learning in the digital age. His talk is scheduled for Friday, May 24, at 10:10 a.m., also in McCormick Center 1303. The theme for the 2013 conference is “Making Connections: Literature, Digital Literacy and the Common Core.” Conference sessions will also cover a range of topics, such as writing techniques, grammar, reading comprehension, digital teaching techniques and reading strategies.

Next year, the Literacy and Learning Conference will celebrate its 50th year with keynote speaker Carol Ann Tomlinson, a leading expert on differentiated instruction in the United States. Bloomsburg University is one of 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
