BU presents Math-Science Summer Experience

BLOOMSBURG — Bloomsburg University’s College of Science and Technology is presenting its sixth annual middle school Math and Science Summer Experience (MSSE) and the fifth annual high school MSSE.

The middle school MSSE is for students entering grades fifth through eighth grades while the high school program is for students entering ninth, 10th or 11th grades. Both camps run from June 25 to 29 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on BU’s campus.

John Polhill, assistant dean of the College of Science and Technology and the camp director, said students “get to experience hands-on math and science and new areas of science that they wouldn’t see in school.”

The middle school MSSE’s daily schedule includes computer programming, mathematical puzzles and codes, kitchen chemistry and an introduction to the night sky. The high school MSSE’s topics are fingerprinting and forensic chemistry, human body investigations, computer forensics criminal scene investigation, mathematical investigations and the night sky.

Both camps are sponsored by the Alcoa Foundation, producer of primary aluminum and fabricated aluminum, and Kawneer,manufacturer of architectural aluminum building products and systems.

The fee is $150, and covers lunch and snacks each day, a participant T-shirt, and all the materials. After April 30, the fee increases to $250. Scholarships are available.
