Haas Gallery exhibition features mixed media art

For immediate release: Sept. 18, 2009

BLOOMSBURG — An exhibit by an artist whose recent works are inspired by booby traps will be on display in Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania's Haas Gallery from Monday, Sept. 21, through Saturday, Oct. 17. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

The exhibit will open with a reception and lecture by Claire Rau, mixed media artist and professor at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, Monday Sept. 21, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"My work is an exploration of combat, specifically objects that fall into the categories of anti-personnel devices, hand-to-hand arms, and barriers," said Rau. "I am interested in building sculpture that forces the viewer to be a participant as well as an intruder."

Rau's work on booby traps was inspired by the action movie, "Predator." Booby traps are typically used on land as emotional threats in non-combat areas and are hidden through camouflage or by sabotaging an everyday object. Many of Rau's traps are hand-built, using simple materials with additions of manufactured parts.

Rau is the recipient of several awards and residencies, including the book arts and printmaking fellowship at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy, in 2006 and the artist-in-residence at Pennsylvania State University in 2007. She has exhibited throughout the United States and internationally; next year she will be showing her works at The Front in New Orleans. Rau completed her bachelor's degree at the University of Maine and her master’s at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
