For immediate release: October 14, 2008

BLOOMSBURG — Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania is joining with the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC) to sponsor the sixth annual breast cancer 5K walk/run Sunday, Oct. 19. The walk will begin at 1 p.m. at BU’s Student Recreation Center. The event is open to the public.

“We are thrilled that Bloomsburg University has decided to team up in support of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the women who we serve across the state,” said Pat Halpin-Murphy, president and founder of the PBCC. “Thanks to their efforts, we can continue working toward our goal of finding a cure for breast cancer now so our daughters won’t have to.”

Linda Sowash, BU’s director of residence life, said more than 300 students, faculty and staff have signed up for the walk. “The intent is to make Pennsylvania residents aware of the programs and support available through the PBCC,” she said.

Registration for the walk will start at noon at the Student Recreation Center; a $20 registration fee will benefit PBCC. Awards will be given throughout the day, including recognition of the student organization, Greek organization and residence hall that raise the most money.

The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition represents, supports and serves breast cancer survivors and their families through educational programming, legislative advocacy and breast cancer research grants.
