BU math honor society to host regional conference

For immediate release: Oct. 10, 2008

BLOOMSBURG — The first Central Pennsylvania Regional Student Science and Mathematics Conference will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17 and 18, in Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Hartline Science Center. Sponsored by BU’s mathematics honor society, Kappa Mu Epsilon, the conference will give math and science majors and opportunity to present their research and interact with students from other colleges and universities who have the same interests.

According to Beth Mauch, professor of mathematics, computer science, and statistics, students from BU and other institutions, such as Lock Haven, Kutztown and Saint Francis universities; University of Scranton; and Saint Joseph’s College, will present their research. Mauch received a National Science Foundation grant last year that will help pay the costs of the conference.

Events will begin Friday, Oct. 17, at 4 p.m. with research presentations by student speakers. At 5 p.m., the keynote speaker, magician and computer scientist Brent Morris, will give a presentation, “Magic Tricks, Card Shuffling and Dynamic Computer Memories,” in Hartline Science Center, room 83. The keynote address is free and open to the public.

On Saturday, Oct. 18, events will continue with student speaker presentations in the Hartline Science Center in rooms 79, 83 and 86 from 9 to 11 a.m.
