For immediate release: Oct. 10, 2008

BLOOMSBURG — Joshua Preiss, a professor of political science at Bucknell University, will present his paper, "A Capable Theory of Equality and Opportunity," Friday, Oct. 24, at 4 p.m. at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Bakeless Center for the Humanities, room 216. The program is free and open to the public.

Preiss will discuss his theory on the challenges of dealing with equal opportunity and address the issues of welfare and economics. He believes his approach offers a view that will “help redeem the American belief that society gives people what they deserve.”

Preiss, who teaches classes in political theory, theories of justice and equality and ethics and international affairs at Bucknell, earned a doctorate degree from the University of Chicago. BU’s department of philosophy is sponsoring his presentation.

Bloomsburg University is one of 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. The university serves approximately 8,000 students, offering comprehensive programs of study in the colleges of Professional Studies, Business, Liberal Arts and Science and Technology.
