BU undergraduate commencement planned for Academic Quad

BLOOMSBURG — Nearly 1,100 Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania seniors will receive bachelor’s degrees Saturday, May 10, during the first commencement ceremonies on BU’s new Academic Quadrangle and the first during the tenure of BU President David Soltz.

BU will hold two commencement ceremonies for undergraduates on May 10. Students from the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Science and Technology will graduate at 10 a.m.; students from the Colleges of Business and Professional Studies will receive their degrees at 3 p.m.

The speaker for both ceremonies is Pennsylvania’s Attorney General Tom Corbett. Corbett, who took his oath of office in January 2005, is the commonwealth’s 25th attorney general. A lifelong Pennsylvania resident, Corbett has served as an adviser to U.S. presidents and governors, has experience as a criminal prosecutor and formed his own private law practice. Corbett’s work focuses on criminal justice, victims’ rights and drug and alcohol prevention and rehabilitation.

The students who earned the highest grade point averages in each college, known as top honor graduates, will be recognized during the commencement ceremonies. The graduates, their hometowns and majors are:

College of Professional Studies — Brittany M. Claar, Claysburg, special education/elementary education; Janelle E. Fenwick, Weaverville, N.C., formerly of Chadds Ford, speech pathology/audiology; Jeanie M. Fritz, Nescopeck,
secondary education/English; and Jestine L. Myers, Danville, early childhood and elementary education.

College of Liberal Arts — Beth A. Gockley, Emmaus, a double major in German and speech pathology/audiology.

College of Business — Amber N. Hackenberg, Middleburg, business administration/accounting.

College of Science and Technology — David J. Shay, Elizabethtown, physics and health physics..

Ten doctor of audiology degrees and 157 master’s degrees will be conferred during graduate commencement Friday, May 9, at 6 p.m. in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall.

Bloomsburg University is one of 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. The university serves approximately 8,000 students, offering comprehensive programs of study in the colleges of Professional Studies, Business, Liberal Arts and Science and Technology.
