BU to host acclaimed jazz band

For immediate release: Feb. 6, 2008

BLOOMSBURG — Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s 2007-08 Celebrity Artist Series continues with a performance by the jazz band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 8 p.m. in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy kicked off the swing revival in the mid-1990s with their appearance in the film, “Swingers.” Performing original creations that combine the influence of early swing, jazz, Latin and other American music, the band draws inspiration from performers such as Cab Calloway, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, which consists of seven band members, has played at the Super Bowl, Orange Bowl, White House and Billboard Music Awards and on TV shows, including “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children age 12 and under.

The band was named by guitarist Scotty Morris after meeting blues guitar legend Albert Collins at one of his concerts. “He signed my poster, ‘To Scotty, the big bad voodoo daddy’, ” Morris said. "I thought it was the coolest name I ever heard on one of the coolest musical nights I ever had. So when it came time to name this band, I didn’t really have a choice. I felt like it was handed down to me.
