For immediate release: March 16, 2007

BLOOMSBURG — Nursing students at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania will host a health fair to provide information and services to Danville area residents. The two-day event, on Saturday, March 31, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 1, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 18 Center St., Danville. The event is open to the public free of charge.

Information on skin cancer, colon/rectal cancer, heart disease and stroke and healthy lifestyles will be available at the fair. Nursing students will also provide free blood pressure screenings and body mass index screenings. The event will feature free food and giveaways, as well as information from a variety of local vendors and health service providers.

The health fair is organized by senior nursing students as part of their community health nursing class at Bloomsburg. Over the course of the semester, the students assessed the behavioral risks and health demographics of Montour County. The information and screenings provided at the fair will focus on health concerns that specifically affect Montour County residents, according to nursing student Candise Gilbert of Schuylkill Haven.

Each semester, senior nursing students assess a local community and organize a free event to provide community members with health services and information. Past communities that have benefited from these programs include Sunbury, Muncy, Lewisburg and Columbia County.

Bloomsburg University is one of 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. The university serves approximately 8,000 students, offering comprehensive programs of study in the colleges of Professional Studies, Business, Liberal Arts and Science and Technology.
