Study abroad is affordable

Studying abroad often costs no more that studying at your home university. Nevertheless, you will want to maximize your resources. Apply for as many scholarships as you can!

Scholarships mentioned here are specifically for studying abroad. Keep in mind, however, that you should apply for any scholarship. It does not necessarily have to be specifically for study abroad. See the very long list of scholarships at Bloomsburg University: BU Scholarships Make sure that you read the information carefully and determine whether you would be a strong candidate for a scholarship.

The Phillip N Stan III & Andrea McHugh Study Abroad/Internship Scholarship is a BU scholarship for Junior or Senior students traveling abroad for academic reasons or internship. Eligibility: minimum 3.0 GPA. Award: two annual awards of $1,250 each. Bloomsburg University Scholarship Application and Office of Global Education Application required. Submit the application to Nawal Bonomo, Global and Multicultural Education. Deadline: February 5, 2016.

Essex University Scholarship (Fall 2016/Spring 2017) - Funding for this scholarship is through a European Union Erasmus+ Grant awarded to Essex University and BU as a partner institution. The Grant covers most travel and living expenses during a one semester study. To apply, complete the study abroad application for the University of Essex (online) and submit an essay on how this experience fits into your academic plan and how it will contribute to your long term professional goal to Nawal Bonomo

The Professional Experience Grant through BU's Professional U. A recent gift to BU will support internships, travel abroad and research projects for students each year. Follow the link above for the application process. Deadline for fall is May 25.

Some scholarships are based on financial need, such as the Gilman Scholarship: Gilman Scholarship

Some scholarships support the “critical languages” (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, etc.), such as the Boren Award: Boren and the National Critical Language Scholarship: NCLS.

Students who wish to study abroad in Germany have several options from the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst - DAAD) Undergraduate Scholarship. See: DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship

The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Foundation offers several scholarships, two of which are dedication to international study: PASSHE Foundation Scholarships

The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), of which Bloomsburg University is a member, is also awarding scholarships of $500 to $2,000, based on financial need. Click here for the PASSHE Study-Abroad Application. Contact the Office of Global Education for further information.

It would also be a good idea to contact you local Rotary Club, which also supports study abroad. Ask the Chair of your department and contact the Dean’s Office in your college. There have been special scholarships awarded for study abroad depending upon available budget resources.
