Center for Financial Analysis Community Outreach

Economics Pennsylvania is the premier not-for-profit economic education and financial literacy organization in the Commonwealth. The organization uses their regional field representatives to develop and deliver educational programs for teachers and students.

Economics-Pennsylvania

Stock Market Game was developed in 1970s by a University of Buffalo professor. Today, 750,000 students compete nationally each year and more than 40,000 students in Pennsylvania compete in these competitions.

The game generates enthusiasm in students by providing an “online simulation of Wall Street trading and sets up a framework for teaching students about the American economic system” (from Economics PA materials). Economics-PA is the only licensed distributor of the Game in Pennsylvania and is recognized as Top 10 Premier Partner of SIFMA (the creator of SMG).

The workshop teaches high school teachers in PA the basics of the Game and how to conduct it successfully in the classrooms. In Fall 2012, Economics PA used the lab to deliver SMG to local high school teachers. The Center was also used by local and regional financial services organizations to conduct seminars and workshop on the issues of personal financial planning, consumer debt management, insurance and risk management, investment planning, and credit scoring.

The goal of these seminars was to improve the participants’ personal financial decisions and ultimately help them achieve financial independence and security. We strive to provide this important service to local community, and will continue to bring financial professionals to our students and members of community.

Stock Market Game Training

Stock Market Game of Pennsylvania

Carolyn Shirk, vice president of EconomicsPennsylvania, recently led a professional development workshop in the Sutliff Hall’s Financial Services Lab for the upcoming annual Stock Market Game of Pennsylvania.

The workshop teaches high school teachers in PA the basics of the Game and how to conduct it successfully in the classrooms. For the past two years, Economics PA used the lab to deliver their Fall SMG to local high school teachers. The Center was also used by local and regional financial services organizations to conduct seminars and workshop on the issues of personal financial planning, consumer debt management, insurance and risk management, investment planning, and credit scoring.
