The BU Forensics (Speech and Debate)Team won the 4th Place Team Sweepstakes award out of 8 schools at the Collegiate Forensic Association’s Annual Winter Tournament held at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina, that was held January 29-30, 2016 Bloomsburg finished ahead of Lynchburg College, the University of Richmond, Lord Fairfax Community College, and Wilkes University. Five of the eight BU competitors won individual speaking and debate awards:

Delaney Hellman: 1st After Dinner Speaking, 3rd Declamation, 5th Pentahlon, 4th Parliamentary Debate Team with Chanty Gbaye, 4th Best

The BU Forensics Team won the 6th Place Team Sweepstakes award out of 14 schools at the CFA Wilkes University Harold Cox Invitational Tournament held on February 5-6, 2016 on the campus of Wilkes University. Five out of seven BU student competitors won individual speaking and debate awards at Wilkes University:

Theresa Clark and DeMoss Jones also competed for Bloomsburg University at the Wilkes Tournament. BU Alumnus, Jackson Staples ’15, Anthropology, and the BU Director of Forensics, Dr. Neil Strine, served as judges for BU at the Wilkes tournament.

Fall 2015 Awards - Morgan State University and Shippensburg University

The BU Forensics Team recently won 25 individual speech and debate awards, including 6 first places, and 5th place and 3rd place overall finishes at two recent Collegiate Forensic Association Speech and Debate tournaments held at Morgan State University in Baltimore, October 30-31, and at Shippensburg University, November 13-14. Bloomsburg University won 5th Place out of 8 schools at Morgan State University, finishing ahead of Liberty University, Lynchburg College, and Lord Fairfax Community College. Bloomsburg University won 3rd place out of 8 schools at the CFA Holiday Tournament held at Shippensburg University, finishing ahead of Liberty University, West Virginia-Parkersburg, the University of Richmond, Davis and Elkins College, and Lord Fairfax Community College. Dr. Neil Strine, Director of Forensics, and BU Alumnus, Jackson Staples ’14, served as speech and debate judges at both tournaments. Dr. Timothy Oleksiak, English, and Dr. Erin Brummett, Communication Studies, serve as faculty coaches for the BU team. Forensics is supported by funding through the BU Community Government Association. The team meets every Monday at 9 PM in Bakeless, Room 202. New members are always welcome.

Collegiate Forensic Association - October 16-17, 2015

The Bloomsburg University Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team won the 5th Place Sweepstakes trophy at the Collegiate Forensic Association’s Annual Fall Speech and Debate Tournament held at the University of Maryland, College Park, October 16-17, 2015. Three BU students won individual speaking and debate awards:

Delaney Hellman: 1st Place Best Speaker Award in Parliamentary Debate (Among 40 debaters); Second Place in Parliamentary Debate with Nora Scheuch (out of 20 debate teams); 2nd Place, After Dinner Speaking; 4th Place, Dramatic Duo with Jayleen Alvarado; 6th Place, Impromptu Speaking; 3rd Place Pentathlon.

The other students competing for Bloomsburg at the tournament included Andy Sheats, Dan Pagana, Joshua Hooks, Alisa Evans, Brook Reichenbach, Anna Scott, and Lucelis Ortega. Dr. Timothy Oleksiak, English, and Dr. Erin Brummet, Communication Studies, serve as faculty coaches for the forensics team. The Director of Forensics, Dr. Neil Strine, served as a Speech and Debate Judge at the tournament. The BU Forensics Team is funded by the Community Government Association and is open to all BU Students. The team meets every Monday at 9 PM in Bakleless, Room #202.

PA Forensic Association’s State Championship Tournament - February 14-15, 2015

Bloomsburg University’s Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team recently won fourth place at the Pennsylvania Forensic Association’s State Championship Tournament at Penn State University, finishing ahead of Penn State and Wilkes University.

Andrew Sheats competed in Parliamentary Debate with Arrista Voorhees, Impromptu Speaking, and Extemporaneous Speaking.

Neil Strine, director of forensics, served as a speech and debate judge at the state tournament. Timothy Oleksiak, of English, and Daniel Bloomingdale, of communication studies, serve as faculty coaches for the Bloomsburg University Team, which is supported by funding through the Community Government Association and provides an opportunity for students to earn college credit towards graduation.

The team meets every Monday at 9 p.m. in Bakeless Center 202. All students are welcome to join the team.

BU Forensics makes impression at two competitions

Bloomsburg University’s Forensics Team recently won the third place team sweepstakes award at the Collegiate Forensic Association’s Annual Winter Tournament held at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, Canada. In addition, the team later won third place at the Wilkes University Harold Cox CFA Tournament. Every team member has won at least one speaking award at each of the tournaments entered so far this spring semester.

Huskies shine at Lord Fairfax Community College forensics tournament - November 14-15, 2014

Bloomsburg University’s Forensics Team recently placed fourth at the Collegiate Forensic Association’s Annual Holiday Tournament at Lord Fairfax Community College in Middletown, Va., finishing ahead of the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Fayetteville State University, the University of Richmond, Shepherd University, Wilkes University, Davis and Elkins College.

The team finished behind Lord Fairfax Community College, while Florida College and Randolph-Macon College tied for second place.

Bloomsburg University’s Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team recently won the third place team sweepstakes award at the Collegiate Forensic Association’s Annual Fall Tournament at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. Seven students won a total of 17 individual speech and debate awards.

Bloomsburg University's Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team won third place out of 10 schools at the Collegiate Forensic Association’s annual Beach Tournament. Six of the 12 students on the team brought home individual speaking awards, including the team president and graduating senior, Dan Clark, who brought home 3 first place awards in Poetry, Dramatic Interpretation of Literature, and Dramatic Duo with Jackson Staples. The Bloomsburg University Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team won 3rd place out of 10 schools at the CFA Harold Cox Speech and Debate Tournament held on Saturday, February 8th on the campus of Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA. All five of the BU student competitors won speaking awards.

Dr. Harry C. “Neil” Strine, Director of Forensics, served as a Speech and Debate Judge and ran the Extemporaneous Speaking Preparation room at the tournament. The BU Forensics Team will compete next at the Pennsylvania State Forensics Championships hosted by Bloomsburg University this weekend. The Forensics team is funded by the Community Government Association and is open to all university students. The team meets every Tuesday at 9 PM in Bakeless, Room #202. No prior experience is necessary to join the team.
