Did you know?

Nearly 20 percent of Husky Nation are first-generation college students

Bloomsburg University is home to a distinctive and wonderfully diverse community of students, including a considerable number of first-generation college students.

First Generation Experience

In general, first-generation students — or first-gen's — are those who consider themselves the first member of their families to attend college. On a more individual level, first-gen students come to BU from a variety of different backgrounds and family situations.

No matter the case, these students are charged to navigate the world of higher education with little to no prior insight from their family or support system. It can be an intimidating situation to be in, but with the help of our Orientation Office and the First2Go! Program, students and their families can more easily acclimate to BU.

The amazing journey to graduation for our first-gen Huskies may involve unique challenges and unexpected obstacles for students as well as their family members. In order to ensure the greatest likelihood of success for this highly devoted population of individuals, BU has compiled an array of tools and resources designed to assist first-gen students with their transitions to life as students and emerging scholars here at BU.

Our dedicated orientation team encourages first-gen students and family members to explore this valuable information as a way to prepare for the exciting road that lies ahead. Email orientation@bloomu.edu for more current information!

Husky Lingo

  • Roongo is our university mascot
  • Building Acronyms are used frequently on campus
  • "Quad"- large grass area centering the academic buildings on lower campus
  • Husky Gold functions as a debit card that students can use to pay for laundry, bookstore purchases, and at any campus dining facility. Students can spend ONLY the amount that is loaded to the Husky Gold account; there is not a credit limit available. To load money to your student’s Husky Gold account, please follow the link.
  • Flex Dollars are automatically assigned when students sign up for a meal plan. Think of the flex dollars as “roll over” expense money. When purchasing food from any campus facility, such as Monty’s Deli, Kehr Union Husky Lounge, Subway, or Steak ‘n Shake, your students can apply a meal swipe and the expense of the meal minus the meal swipe value is taken from the student’s flex dollars account. Flex will roll over from the fall to spring semester, but not from the spring to fall semester. If a student does not spend their remaining flex dollars at the end of the year, it becomes unredeemable and will be deposited into a university scholarship fund.
  • The Commons is our main dining facility.
  • OWLs are Orientation Workshop Leaders.
  • CA or "Community Assistant" The primary role of a CA (Community Assistant) is a 'helper'. Essentially, their duties are to assist you with questions, concerns, or problems. They also plan programs and activities for residents, enforce university policy and work the desk. They are your first line in seeking resolution to a problem or any other assistance.
  • Res Life or Residence Life
  • Upper Campus
  • "The Fountain" There is a fountain in downtown Bloomsburg, near Bella Luna Restaurant. On campus, we have a much smaller scale replica of the same fountain.
  • BOLT is for students and faculty to exchange information such as syllabi, PowerPoint presentations, assignment drop boxes, grades, and so on.
  • MyHusky is a webpage where students can find information regarding their finances (tuition bill, scholarships applied, etc.) and course schedule. It also is where students schedule their classes after their first semester at BU. Additional information found on this webpage includes; emergency contact information, any holds placed on the account, and your student’s academic advisor.
  • The Rec is our gym facility on lower campus.
  • Res Comp can help you with your computer and gaming devices on campus.
  • The Husky can satisfy almost any taste bud, even at the latest hour since it's open until midnight.
