Dr. Mark Tapsak, associate professor, worked in the biotech industry for 9 years before joining Bloomsburg’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

In his first industry position with Medtronic Inc. (Minneapolis, MN), he helped to develop novel polyurethane and silicone-based biomaterials to be used in Medtronic’s implantable medical devices. In his second industrial appointment with DexCom Inc. (San Diego, CA), he developed and refined numerous manufacturing processes for a fully implantable amperometric glucose sensor. Those processes included the production of a multilayer polyurethane membrane that incorporated an immobilized glucose oxidase, and multiple epoxy and silicone adhesive steps in the fabrication of the device.

At Bloomsburg University, Dr. Tapsak remains active with polymer synthesis and characterization projects. In all aforementioned positions, Dr. Tapsak developed expertise in polymer synthesis methods and materials characterization using NMR, GPC, TGA, DSC and mechanical testing.

He received his B.E.S. in Chemistry at Saint Cloud State University (Saint Cloud, MN) and a Ph.D. in polymer chemistry in 1995 under Professor William P. Weber at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, CA).
