EGGS Scholarships and Awards


Congratulations to Aaron Pysher and Tyler Wenner, who will both be receiving financial assistance for their Geology Field Camp experiences this summer! Aaron is the winner of the 2013-2014 Daniel J. Tearpock Award, and Tyler is the winner of the 2013-2014 Braun Geology Field Camp Scholarship. Well done!

Through the generosity of its alumni and faculty, Bloomsburg University's Department of Environmental, Geographical and Geological Sciences is fortunate to be able to offer scholarships and research funding to help defray costs for our majors:

Bernard and Frances Young Scholarship

This scholarship is for Secondary Education majors planning a career in teaching geography.

Applicants must:
  • be full-time students who will be juniors or seniors in semester of award payment
  • have been formally accepted into the teaching program
  • posses a minimum 3.0 grade point average
  • have indication of promise as a reliable member of the teaching profession
  • demonstrate financial need.. (note: this means you must fill out a Free Application for Federal Financial Aid or FAFSA.)
  • pending donor’s availability, agree to attend the spring BU scholarship luncheon and reception with him or her

Instructions:

Please fill out a Bloomsburg University Scholarship Application (can be found on ISIS or at the Office of Financial Aid) and return it to the Chairperson of the Department of Educational Studies & Secondary Education.

Braun Geology Field Camp Scholarship

This scholarship is for undergraduate Geosciences: Geology and EGGS: Professional Geology majors who attend an accredited summer Geologic field camp training program as part of their requirement for the Geology degree. (Students attending a Hydrogeologic, Environmental Geologic, or Earth Science field camp may not apply for this scholarship).

Applicants must:
  • posses a 3.0 GPA or higher in geology and supporting math/science courses required by the geology degree
  • have a positive recommendation by the geosciences faculty on the student's likelihood of successfully completing the geology degree and going on to be an asset to the geology profession.
  • demonstrate financial need. (note: this means you must fill out a Free Application for Federal Financial Aid or FAFSA.)

Instructions:

Please fill out a Bloomsburg University Scholarship Application (can be found on ISIS or at the Office of Financial Aid) and return it to the Chairperson, Department of Environmental, Geographical, and Geological Sciences, along with the required essay.

Other information:

Applications are usually due in early February, and funds are disbursed after confirmation of satisfactory completion of the field camp.

Daniel J. Tearpock Scholarship

This scholarship is for undergraduate Earth Science or Geosciences majors who are applying to an accredited summer field camp training program

Applicants must:
  • be in good academic standing
  • demonstrate financial need (note: this means you must fill out a Free Application for Federal Financial Aid or FAFSA.)
  • attend an accredited sumer field camp

Instructions:

Please submit the completed department Tearpock scholarship application and required essay to the Chairperson, Department of Environmental, Geographical, and Geological Sciences.

Other information:

Applications are usually due in early February, and funds are disbursed after confirmation of satisfactory completion of the field camp. Selection is made by the department faculty in consultation with donor.

Richard White '78 Geosciences Student-Faculty Research and Attendance At Professional Meeting Fund

RIGHT:EGGS research students getting ready to present their results at the 2013 Northeastern Section Meeting of the Geological Society of America in Bretton Woods, NH (Travel funded by the White Fund)

The White Fund provides support for:

  1. Geosciences student-faculty research expenses and student travel to conferences to present their research results
  2. student conference attendance (even if the student is not presenting)
  3. Geosciences class field trips (if departmental field trip funds are exhausted)
  4. faculty research expendables and travel
  5. low cost research equipment and software that cannot be purchased through the regular departmental budget or Academic Enhancement funds

Applicants must:
  • Request funding to support one of the designated categories.
  • Submit a completed White Fund application. (Please see your research advisor for an application.)

Instructions:

Applications should be filled out in consultation with your research advisor and submitted to the Chairperson, Department of Environmental, Geographical, and Geological Sciences.

Other information:

Selection is made by the department budget committee and applications are accepted year-round, depending on the availability of funds.
