Education of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Camp Experiences
Our teacher preparation program in the Education of the Deaf is very unique when compared to other teacher preparation programs in any field because we offer two CAMP practicum experiences.
» The first CAMP experience is our Preschool Mini-Camp for Deaf and hard of hearing children ages 2 to 6 years.
Preschool Mini-Camp for D/HH Children
In your first semester of graduate school, that is the first summer session of summer school, students take part in the Teaching Speech to the Deaf class and Practicum for the Deaf. These two experiences incorporate the BU Preschool Mini-camp for Deaf/HH Children.
This mini-camp is a great learning experience and opportunity for our graduate students to interact with deaf and hard of hearing preschool children, ages 2 to 6 years old.
Graduate students plan lessons for each day of this preschool mini-camp for the children and practicum experience for the graduate students. These lessons are fun and interactive and are based around the central goal of providing the students with opportunities to gain new vocabulary through language experiences. Children are presented with the opportunity to learn in an open environment that does not focus on one mode of communication.
» The second CAMP practicum experience is our Camp HERO (Here Everyone Really is ONEd for Deaf and hard of hearing children and youth ages 6 to 21 years.
Camp HERO
During the second summer session of your first semester of graduate school, students take Teaching Language to the Deaf/HH One and Two. Incorporated into these language courses is yet another opportunity to interact with older D/HH children, ages 6-18 at Camp HERO.
Philosophy and goals of Camp HERO are to promote the:
- social growth
- creativity
- self-expression
- and self-confidence ...
of D/HH children and youth through camp activities and access to appropriate D/HH role models.
