Keashla Marengo

“Gaining practical experiences in a variety of departments in higher education helped me gain vital skills to succeed in supporting students and collaborating with colleagues in my current position. When I interviewed for this job, one of my interviewers stated ‘When I looked at your resume, I felt as if this position was written for you!’ In addition to gaining relevant field experience at Bloomsburg and Pennsylvania College of Technology, each of my inspirational and supporting supervisors taught me valuable lessons I have applied to my position as an educator and professional in higher education.”

– Keashla Marengo ‘ 14, Academy of the Arts University

Graduate Assistantships

A graduate assistantship (GA) is a financial package awarded to qualified graduate students in exchange for research or administrative duties at Bloomsburg University. In addition to helping you fund your graduate education, a GA is a terrific way to get practical experience in student affairs, advance your skills and employment prospects, and help you figure out what sort of work setting best suits you.

Assistantships are competitive. Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress to hold a GA and be enrolled in at least 9 credits for that academic term. For more information: http://www.bloomu.edu/gradschool/assistantships

The Field Experience

The field experience is a required element of the CSA program and an important mechanism for the application of theory-to-practice. Sometimes called a practicum or internship, this is the capstone experience for the CSA program and is designed to be an educational and developmental experience. The objective is to help the student gain knowledge and skills in a student affairs area and within a postsecondary institution while putting “theory to practice” and exemplifying the scholar-practitioner philosophy. This is a unique opportunity for the student who has the benefit of guidance from a faculty member and a site supervisor who both have the student’s educational interests in mind. During the field experience students are to be thought of and treated as entry-level professional practitioners.

Our students partner with professionals at Bloomsburg University and institutions a bit further away to offer students a robust, professional level supervised experience. Brief descriptions of several previous field experiences noted here. Some of the campus offices that have offered field experiences include:
