China Summer Study Abroad - Program Academics
Students are required to sign up for China Today (19.212), a 3-credit course with 2 General Education Points towards Culture and Diversity, offered by Dr. Jing Luo. Course includes lectures on Beijing, China’s economic reform, and current socio-economic issues. Coursework includes presentations, readings, and blog writing. Blogs will be published at BU study abroad website.
Required field trips typically include Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Great Wall, Hongqiao Market (Bazaar of daily items and gifts), Peking Opera, martial art show, and acrobatic show.
Also features a weekend trip to Confucius hometown Qufu and the Mountain Taishan in Shandong Province.
Mandarin language will be offered by Peking University, transferrable into BU Chinese 101(4 credits); or, as a general 4-credit BU transfer under “Chinese 299” for those who have taken Chinese 101 and count toward electives of the Chinese Minor.
Class arrangement: Instruction is divided into elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. Students are arranged according to the results of a Mandarin placement exam. Class size is approximately 15 per class. Historically, most students have been placed at elementary level classes.
Class hours: Monday through Friday, 4 hours per day, 20 hours per week.
