  • The university Fire extinguisher must be place inside your apartment next to the front door when you leave. University Police will be checking every apartment.
  • University Police will be testing fire alarms, sprinklers and entering every apartment during the break.
  • Painting bids, work orders, and various construction projects are beginning. Please be aware if you're staying over break that university staff will enter your apartment if necessary.
  • After closing, apartment staff will enter EACH apartment and complete a final safety check.

For those of you who plan on returning for the spring 2012 semester:

  • Last person to leave must make sure the front door is closed and locked

  • Make sure the toilet has stopped running before you leave, to avoid an overflow
  • Collect trash from all rooms and take out the garbage
  • Turn the heat setting to 66 degrees so the pipes won’t freeze (make sure it's set to heat and not air conditioning!)
  • Make sure apartment has been cleaned thoroughly to accept new roommates, if someone moves in on Jan. 21, 2012
  • Failure to clean your apartment before your departure will result in a cleaning fee

Because we have had water pipes break in the past, it is strongly recommended that you take valuables such as computers, TVs, stereos, etc. home over break. The university is not liable for damage or theft of your personal items.

If you do leave items in your room, make sure they are not on the floor or under the bed where water can puddle and cause damage. You can obtain the student insurance plan at any time by calling Student Personal Property Plan 1-800-256-6774.

For those not returning for the spring 2012 semester:

  • Complete a Housing Release Form. Failure to complete the form will result in a bill.
  • If you're withdrawing or taking a leave of absence, complete all paperwork at the registrar’s office in the Student Services Center.
  • When you're ready to leave, you must check out at the JKA Community Building by returning your mailbox key in the Express Check-Out envelope you received. After closing, if your apartment is not left in move-in condition you will be assessed a bill for cleaning.
  • Failure to officially check out will result in $25 fee
  • If you decide not to return to the university over break, notify residence life and the registrar’s office by Jan. 3, 2012. The upper campus office will close at noon on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011. All students who are moving out must be checked out by then.
